Storm Chasers

Storm Chasers, the parasites of the contractor world

  • They are known for the use of cheap material and labor.
  • Show fake (usually made themselves) damage they "find" during an inspection.
  • Unlicensed Contractors after major disasters.
  • Like to take the money and run.
  • Provide a long term warranty with no intent of honoring.

Signs they are a Storm Chaser

There's a huge difference between being a "Storm Remediation" company and a "Storm Chaser" company. Storm chasers can be from out of state or local. They can disguise themselves very well because they do not want you to know they are Storm Chasers!

  • They have a "used car salesman" feel to them
  • They offer to work along with your insurance carrier but can't show that a Public Adjuster will be involved
  • They don't have a long term review history
  • They have a ton of Google reviews
  • Are not BBB rated
  • Can use pressuring sales tactics

Tips to avoid

  • Ask to see their Public Adjuster license. Assisting with a claim legally requires them to be a licensed Public Adjuster.
  • Check their car tags to see what state they are from. If they are out of state, that's a huge sign.
  • Ask for local references. Also, make sure they are recent.
  • Check their contractors license and insurance. Roof replacement in TN requires either a contractors license or a home improvement license depending on the job amount.
  • Watch them perform the inspection. Make sure they aren't flipping tabs or pressing something into the shingle.
  • Ask them for assurance if they ask for money down. Either give a partial payment once material is delivered or a check from them to hold until they are finished.
  • Ask where they purchase their material from and call and ask for a reference.

Just be aware! Stay away from unlicensed contractors and storm chasers

There are some great local contractors working storms. I DO NOT want to take away from them. However, I do want to bring awareness to the "Storm Chasers".

Once I had a local guy working with an out of state "Storm Chaser" company that was very disrespectful with a customer I was meeting with. Even after I informed him that he wasn't needed, he proceeded to be very pushy and argumentative. That should NEVER happen!

I won't begin to go into details on the times I've heard of fraud or unethical practices from the Storm Chasers. I think we have all heard stories by now.
